Interested in teaching climbing?

Are you looking to equip yourself with a new set of skills that could lead to future work? Our nationally recognised Climbing Wall Instructor training courses will provide you with the qualifications required to teach climbing at indoor climbing centres or on outdoor climbing walls. We offer 2 training courses at Big Rock: the Climbing Wall Instrutctor qualification for the supervision and management of top rope climbing and bouldering, and the Climbing Wall Development Instructor qualification for teaching lead climbing.

Climbing Wall Instructor qualification.

The Climbing Wall Instructor qualification is for climbers who wish to supervise and be responsible for groups at indoor and outdoor climbing walls. The qualification covers the supervision and management of top rope climbing and bouldering, and covers techniques such as group supervision, climbing equipment suitability, climbing safety and basic climbing movement skills. Please note that the qualification excludes the teaching of lead climbing: this is covered by the Climbing Wall Development Instructor qualification (see below).

The qualification requires a 2 day training course, a period of consolidation followed by a 1 day assessment. Our training course also includes the optional Abseil Module for supervisors who want to run group abseiling sessions.

At the end of the training course each candidate will be de-briefed and given an indication of what is needed before they present themselves for assessment.

Continual Professional Development training.

In addition to Climbing Wall Instructor training courses we also operate CPD (Continuing Professional Development) training sessions for instructors who are already minimum Climbing Wall Instructor qualified. The sessions are aimed at ensuring that all qualified instructors can provide safe climbing sessions with the best quality instruction possible.

Our CPD instructor training sessions cover a variety of topics that we think will be of interest to instructors and are open to both external instructors and Big Rock instructors. CPD is now starting to be regarded as mandatory for all active instructors and the sessions are also an ideal way of achieving CPD requirements. Each training session is 2 hours long and costs £10 / person.
